and in the last step did you smudge lightly?

I use a tablet and use the airbrush. However, airbrush is basically a brush with different opacity depending on pen pressure (but it never goes thin...). Mouse users would need to use opacity to help them out with coloring this way.

Yup, I smudge lightly to blend the colors in well together. The smudge tool is probably one of your most useful tool.
